CANNES Part 2: the Movies

CANNES as usual left me with a must-see movies list. However, generally it's quite long, and is likely to get even longer - about many films shown at the fest there is very little information yet. So I give you the five Cannes films I want to see ASAP!

    THE ARTIST
Without a doubt, a top number on the list. It's set in the 1920s, it's shot as a silent film, and, on top of everything else, it stars one of the biggest French screen charmers ever - Jean Dujardine, who, by the way, got BEST ACTOR for this performance! Since I'm in love with the 1920s as the fashion and lifestyle era, am a lover of silent movies and a fan of Dujardine - "The Artist" seems like a movie made especially for me. And it also has John Goodman in it - a treat!

    MELANCHOLIA
In general I pretty much watch all of Lars Von Trier's films, because he's like no one else, a master-provocateur, and, considering that I often avoid the really dramatic, tragic films, it makes him something of an exception. However there are also extra reasons to see Melancholia. First is Lars Von Trier's ban from Cannes that somehow instantly made the movie 10 times more interesting - after all it's talking about its "risky" aesthetic is what got him into trouble. Second reason is that it's about a planet rushing towards the Earth threatening to put the end to its existence - sounds alluring. Third reason is Kirsten Dunst's BEST ACTRESS award. It's not the end of the list, but you get the picture.

    MIDNIGHT IN PARIS
I'm a big fan of Woody Allen, and even though not all his films are very good, especially lately, since he's been totally repeating himself, but lots of critics did praise "Midnight in Paris" which fills me with excitement! It also has a great cast and apparently includes some time travel. In short I would love to see Woody make "passionate love" to Paris as it was described by some reviewers.

    SLEEPING BEAUTY
One word: mysterious. That's the one thing I understand about this film so far. Also, Emily Browning is doing a lot of scenes here in her underwear ... and probably nude too. Judging but what's revealed in the trailer she's being hired by some pretentious lady at a mansion as something of a call girl, or maybe prostitute - only it's much more fancy, exquisite and complex than that. Let's see...

    TREE OF LIFE
First off, it did win the Palme D'Ore and I usually watch the top winners. Secondly it has Sean Penn playing the son of Brad Pitt - it's one of those seriously weird things that you just have to see to believe. Overall, based on some reviews I've read, Terrence Malick's "Tree of Life" is mostly a meditation on, well, life, its origins (they say there are even dinosaurs in there!), fathers and sons etc. with breathtaking visuals and not much of a plot.

Can't wait to "Sucker Punch"!

I know I posted about this film already, but all those teaser-promotions - featurettes, new stills and other news bits that keep coming up - make me seriously look forward to this! Anyway"SUCKER PUNCH" is opening in just a week in the U.S. which means we're about to get some proper reviews. Of course there is every chance that the film's gonna suck despite awesome pics and trailers, but I sure hope it won't or if it does - not completely. I love girl power films, and a movie starring a character that looks like a porn-schoolgirl-meets-Black-Mamba plus a gang of S&M fetishist's wet dreams/killer warrior chicks, altogether doing an incredible amount of ass kicking - can't be all bad! In the worst case it should make an awesome piece of cyberpunk trash.

And they have JON HAMM in it too! Definitely, can't be bad...

Johnny on Stranger Tides

So I finally came to terms with the fact that there is going to be another "PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN" movie (loved the first one, disappointed with the rest) and will stop ranting about how DEPP is wasting time and talent while he could be doing something new and how Hollywood can never just "live it alone" and turns every successful flick into a saga with usually lame sequels. I read an interview with the film's creators in EMPIRE, and I know it's supposed to be a proper pirate adventure with JACK SPARROW as central figure and its actually based on a BOOK. Fine. Looking at Johnny staring boldly at the horizon in this latest poster gives me hope it can actually Be good. Well, Johnny, it better be...

Kristen Stewart in US Vogue

It may be a bit belated - KRISTEN STEWART appeared on the cover of US VOGUE in February, but I just yesterday stumbled upon this photo shoot while browsing pics for another post, and well ... I do like Kristen. A lot. Mind you - I have zero interest in "Twillight," I've seen only the first film and liked only its first half - namely Stewart's awkward teenager. She was even more awesomely awkward in "Adventureland" and simply awesome in "THE RUNAWAYS"as rock maiden Joan Jett. I still have to see "Welcome to the Rileys" (where she played a troubled girl - again) and looking forward to "On the Road." In short I simply admire her combination of cool, awkwardness and beauty, which was mostly captured even in such a glamorous photo shoot. Photographed by Mario Testino, styled by Tonne Goodman.

Everything is repetition ... or reinvention?

That was exactly my thought when I first saw trailer for "RANGO." Johnny Depp ... as a lizard ... in the dessert ... wearing a Hawaiian shirt - that's like a full-on homage to Raoul Duke a.k.a. Hunter S. Thompson a.k.a. one of my favourite writers ever! And in fact ... I could easily imagine him being reborn as something like Rango. I'm sure he would have loved this character.

Oscar 2011 dresses: Yes, No and Hmmm

With all this Oscar fashion buzz and grading of celebrity dresses, I simply had to have my own say – at least about the outfits that evoked strong emotions. Thus I sorted Hollywood gals into three categories: those who nailed it, those who failed it, and those kinda hanging in the middle…

    YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!

    Natalie Portman in Rodarte

Apart from simply glowing the way only a beautiful future mom can, Natalie also picked a simply perfect dress to match both the occasion and her newly shaped figure. Bravo!

Jennifer Lawrence in Calvin Klein Collection

This Hollywood newcomer absolutely nailed it at her first Oscars red carpet. A simple but totally flattering cut plus great color - she easily beat all the big stars that opted for red that night.

    Mila Kunis in Elie Saab

Mila once again proved she's one of the sexiest youngsters in Hollywood today. Judging from her other recent red carpet appearances she knows how to pick a perfect dress and how to rock it. Just look at her - she's a vision!

Gwyneth Paltrow in Calvin Klein Collection

Although I'm not sure about this very architectural cleavage cutout, she's quite adorable in this. The metallic glow and color that suits her so well play the main part.

Cate Blanchette in Givenchy Haute Couture

This Givenchy creation is a complex work of art, and it certainly takes the right lady to pull that off, someone like ... Cate. Some other lady could look just weird in this but she's a real stunner!

    Amy Adams in L'Wren Scott

I love this deep blue, which is also perfect for natural redheads like Amy and the shimmer adds it the necessary glamour. I'm not crazy about the high neck though, as well as that giant jewel. It would have been much better strapless!

    Florence Welch in Valentino

I love Florence because she's great musician, because she's a bold redhead and because she manages to stay true to her vintage style, while staying true to the red carpet demands. In this champagne-coloured frock she looks dreamy and light as feather!

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

    Anne Hathaway in Valentino

Apparently that's what happens when you're hosting the ceremony and there is all that pressure to blow everyone away with your first appearance... In the end you just freak - and turn up looking like this. It seems like Anne wrapped the piece of fabric around herself at last minute, and as result her breasts look flattened, her waistline is all wrinkles and the bottom part is like a crumpled bright-red plastic bag. And speaking of red - this shade is just wrong for her.

Nicole Kidman in Christian Dior Haute Couture

Ok, this is a way bigger disaster than Anne's, since it looks out of place and out of fashion. All those layers and cuts are so totally wrong, I don't even know how to explain this!

    HHHMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM...

Scarlett Johansson in Dolce & Gabbana

I do like the general idea of it, but it still somehow comes out not good. Why? Maybe because magenta's wrong for her, the pencil-shape doesn't flatter her figure and her hair is too lackluster for the occasion?

    Michelle Williams in Chanel

I'm sorry, but this is just boring. Maybe it also has to do with her expression and haircut (which I hate for some reason), but even though the dress is see-through, she doesn't look sexy or seductive at all. Just dull.

    Sandra Bullock in Vera Wang

I know some critics loved it, can't really support them. Maybe it's the hair, maybe the shade of red (as with Anne) that's just slightly wrong, maybe the bodice top that is strange and uncomplimentary. Sorry, doesn't work for me at all.

My discovery of the day: minimalist posters by Matt Needle. I'm a big fan of quirky minimalist film posters in general, and Mr Needle is doing a pretty awesome job with them. New uber-cool "Sucker Punch" trailer

Don't know about you, but I just loooove a cool flick full of sexy ACTION CHICKS kicking the world in the ass, and "SUCKER PUNCH" (opening in less than a month) looks to be packed with the latter. Hey it even has something of a plot: a girl sent to an insane asylum by her step father (true - that whole evil step MOTHER business was getting a bit old) finds refuge in an alternate reality. And boy, that's one hell of a reality (judging by the trailers)! Monsters, crazy war machines, dragons and pretty much the full-on Hell breaks loose on the sweet-faced little girls, who respond with all they got - and they've got plenty! And just look at those warrior outfits! They'll make awesome Halloween costumes - that is if the film lives up to its promise (given by yet another super stylish trailer) and really proves a smash hit.

Kill Bill: One Big Fat Remix

This awesome video, put together by Robert Grigsby Wilson and Kriby Ferguson, shows how "Kill Bill" borrows bits and pieces from so many other films creating a smart and stylish mix. Also on display are Tarantino's very own trademarks remixed again and again. But then ... Tarantino was always open about the fact that he's a film buff director. Try watching as many flicks as he did before pointing fingers!
