CANNES Part 2: the Movies

CANNES as usual left me with a must-see movies list. However, generally it's quite long, and is likely to get even longer - about many films shown at the fest there is very little information yet. So I give you the five Cannes films I want to see ASAP!

    THE ARTIST
Without a doubt, a top number on the list. It's set in the 1920s, it's shot as a silent film, and, on top of everything else, it stars one of the biggest French screen charmers ever - Jean Dujardine, who, by the way, got BEST ACTOR for this performance! Since I'm in love with the 1920s as the fashion and lifestyle era, am a lover of silent movies and a fan of Dujardine - "The Artist" seems like a movie made especially for me. And it also has John Goodman in it - a treat!

    MELANCHOLIA
In general I pretty much watch all of Lars Von Trier's films, because he's like no one else, a master-provocateur, and, considering that I often avoid the really dramatic, tragic films, it makes him something of an exception. However there are also extra reasons to see Melancholia. First is Lars Von Trier's ban from Cannes that somehow instantly made the movie 10 times more interesting - after all it's talking about its "risky" aesthetic is what got him into trouble. Second reason is that it's about a planet rushing towards the Earth threatening to put the end to its existence - sounds alluring. Third reason is Kirsten Dunst's BEST ACTRESS award. It's not the end of the list, but you get the picture.

    MIDNIGHT IN PARIS
I'm a big fan of Woody Allen, and even though not all his films are very good, especially lately, since he's been totally repeating himself, but lots of critics did praise "Midnight in Paris" which fills me with excitement! It also has a great cast and apparently includes some time travel. In short I would love to see Woody make "passionate love" to Paris as it was described by some reviewers.

    SLEEPING BEAUTY
One word: mysterious. That's the one thing I understand about this film so far. Also, Emily Browning is doing a lot of scenes here in her underwear ... and probably nude too. Judging but what's revealed in the trailer she's being hired by some pretentious lady at a mansion as something of a call girl, or maybe prostitute - only it's much more fancy, exquisite and complex than that. Let's see...

    TREE OF LIFE
First off, it did win the Palme D'Ore and I usually watch the top winners. Secondly it has Sean Penn playing the son of Brad Pitt - it's one of those seriously weird things that you just have to see to believe. Overall, based on some reviews I've read, Terrence Malick's "Tree of Life" is mostly a meditation on, well, life, its origins (they say there are even dinosaurs in there!), fathers and sons etc. with breathtaking visuals and not much of a plot.

"True Blood" returns for season 4 in June

It's less than a month till "TRUE BLOOD" premiers its fourth season - on June 26 to be precise. Surely, all of its fans should be excited, and I kinda am too, though previous season seriously cooled off my sentiments about the show.
Not sure what happened there, the writers were taking to much drugs (read: drinking vampire blood) or what, but the storyline was a total disaster. Rather than having one central plot and a couple supporting ones like in 2 previous seasons, the show completely lost its footing, moving in a dozen different directions at a time, so much that it was almost impossible to keep up with the events. It pretty much turned into a slasher where someone gets brutally murdered or drenched in blood every 5 minutes - TRUE BLOOD indeed. I remember an episode where Bill first almost killed Sookie, than saved her, than they said goodbye forever and then they finished it off by having crazy monkey sex right at the murder scene. By the end of the season one just couldn't help feeling sick of Sookie and Bill, who suddenly lost all of his masculine romantic hero appeal - and considering those 2 are the central characters, it can't be a good sign... The season finale also left innumerable loose ends, so "Previously on True Blood" is a must-see before getting down to watching SEASON 4.
Of course I'm not giving up on "True Blood" just yet - I still hope it has something to surprise me with. After all, I started watching it not because I'm a crazy vampire fan (No "Twillight" for me!), but because of its "Sex, Drugs & Rock'n'roll" attitude and killer opening credits combined with obvious social satire on racism, segregation, religion fanatics and the like. But the latter was almost completely absent from third season, so, please, please, "True Blood," get better!

P.S.: I couldn't help feeling nostalgic about how it all began, so to give you a little feel...

Cats gone viral: "Tiger Face" by Baddies and "United" by Pete and The Pirates

Just stumbled upon "TIGER FACE" by BADDIES - both a visually grasping video and a very catchy & groovy song: "Put on your tiger face, come on!"

Also, one of my most favorite songs of late, "UNITED" by PETE AND THE PIRATES, just got a video ... and it's full of CATS! I agree there are way too many LOL cats videos nowadays - but come on, the video is still super cute - any cat lover would agree! Meow...

Soundtrack of the day: "Still Here" by Brother

I simply like the fresh, vivid and completely unpretentious sound of this very new UK band, BROTHER. They've released only two singles so far, including "Still Here," but I'm already looking forward to their début album due in July.

Micky Green for Mango

MICKY GREEN, an Australian-born musician, living in Paris, became the newest celebrity ambassador for MANGO. Quite a stylish gal herself (as you can tell from her music video below) and former model, Micky does a great job of showing off Mango's latest line, which is all about minimalism and color-blocking.

House M.D.'s musical turn

HOUSE M.D. used to be my favorite show. But by season 6 it has gotten so self-repetitive, sentimental and almost predictable, that I continued watching only as a habit and because Hugh Laurie's doc is such a pleasure to observe. Yet, episode 15, "Bombshells," of season 7 has just proved that the show still has ways to surprise me, even if does so by dipping into alternative genres such as sitcom, action, zombie horror and musical. This video is Lisa Cuddy's final dream sequence.

Musical discovery of the week: Pete and The Pirates

Great tunes, fun lyrics and low-budget vids - PETE AND THE PIRATES is indie rock at its best and most enjoyable - at least for me it is. The guys released their debut album, "Little Death," back in 2008 and as of today I've got it in my iPod, while excitedly waiting for their second, "One Thousand Pictures" that is due May 23. After all the song "United" from this upcoming record is what made me fall for them!

Lady Gaga Google interview

I'm not a fan of LADY GAGA. I know that most fashion bloggers out there love her, sometimes even worship her and certainly consider her a top fashion icon. However I'm more inclined to see her as an ingenious show-biz project of a talented producer (or a whole gang of them), her every move carefully calculated to appeal to the broadest possible audience. However, I can not deny the fact that she's a big pop culture phenomenon and I was hoping this interview would shed some light on what Gaga is really like.

Well, my verdict is that she appears sweet and earnest, but I can't help suspecting that a great part of it is an act. And I did catch her being quite hypocritical on several occasions throughout the interview. For instance, she claimed her crazy outfits don't really matter to her fans, that they don't even notice them - so why do they try so hard to copy her style???

She also said she's great at dodging paparazzi and that she's first of all a musician, yet wearing tights and no pants to a baseball game (and that's just one of her many stunts) does seem like an attempt to get noticed and photographed whenever she's out in public. Such obvious obsession with staying in the spotlight at all times doesn't exactly befit someone who calls herself first of all a musician to her core...

Guilty pleasure of the day: "Better Than Today" by Kylie Minogue

While I'm not generally a pop-music fan - at least not of its most mass-produced kind - every now and there comes a tune that sticks firmly in my mind. This time it's KYLIE's single "Better Than Today." And the only way to "unstuck" it from my brain is to listen to the song over and over - till I get bored with it. Besides she models some cool sexy outfits in the video and just look at those killer LOUBOUTINS!

Kate Moss in Dior Addict lipstick commercial

    KATE MOSS
plays herself (well, almost) in the new commercial for the new DIOR ADDICT LIPSTICK. OK, the supermodel in the video is a bit too classy and elegant while Moss's personal style is decidedly provocative, but there is certainly no other famous model out there who'd be more fit to campaign for a luxury cosmetic product named Addict.

Avril Lavigne is back: "What the Hell"?

Just watched AVRIL LAVIGNE's newest video for "WHAT THE HELL" - the first single from her latest album - "GOODBYE LULLABY" and ... can't say that I'm impressed. I mean it's a fun, entertaining and danceable pop song, but it's been four years since her latest release, "The Best Damn Thing," so one couldn't help expecting a change. Well, ff there is one here, it's not too obvious. Avril clearly has no intention of coming back to her punk rock roots as in her first two albums, staying firmly on the pop-princess track. I mean sure, she's still trying to maintain that "rebel teen" image: in the video she's making her poor boyfriend chase her across town while she hijacks a taxi and plays basketball with the big boys - 'cause she's so free spirited and stuff. But come on, she even released her own perfume which she shows off in the said video - how BRITNEY is that???
I mean I've never been her biggest fan or anything, but I do miss Avril circa her debut CD "Let Go." Check out one of her first ever singles, "LOSING GRIP," to see what I mean.

Natalie Portman for Miss Dior Cherie

Natalie Portman is ever so adorable in this ad campaign for Miss Dior Cherie. In the video she's portrayed as a classy and chic French mademoiselle. Well, it was certainly about time - after all she played two of her most famous roles (in "Leon" and "Black Swan") alongside French actors and is about to merry a Frenchman.

"Satellite" by Lelia Broussard

I discovered Lelia Broussard among 16 unsigned artists currently competing for the honour of being featured on the cover of the Rolling Stone (you can check them all out and vote here http://www.rollingstone.com/choosethecover). Her music is rather simple pop, but it's melodious and feathery light like a breeze of fresh air and her voice is pleasant and clear. And I also like that she doesn't have those typical model looks - a singer with a personality.

New uber-cool "Sucker Punch" trailer

Don't know about you, but I just loooove a cool flick full of sexy ACTION CHICKS kicking the world in the ass, and "SUCKER PUNCH" (opening in less than a month) looks to be packed with the latter. Hey it even has something of a plot: a girl sent to an insane asylum by her step father (true - that whole evil step MOTHER business was getting a bit old) finds refuge in an alternate reality. And boy, that's one hell of a reality (judging by the trailers)! Monsters, crazy war machines, dragons and pretty much the full-on Hell breaks loose on the sweet-faced little girls, who respond with all they got - and they've got plenty! And just look at those warrior outfits! They'll make awesome Halloween costumes - that is if the film lives up to its promise (given by yet another super stylish trailer) and really proves a smash hit.

Kill Bill: One Big Fat Remix

This awesome video, put together by Robert Grigsby Wilson and Kriby Ferguson, shows how "Kill Bill" borrows bits and pieces from so many other films creating a smart and stylish mix. Also on display are Tarantino's very own trademarks remixed again and again. But then ... Tarantino was always open about the fact that he's a film buff director. Try watching as many flicks as he did before pointing fingers!
